MAILBOX THEFT

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I want to inform you of several unfortunate circumstances that occurred in our city recently and caution you to be aware of these risks. The incidents involve theft of mail and ultimately identity and suspicious magazine sales solicitation requiring signatures.

Several weeks ago, some residents had mail stolen from their mailboxes. Some of the mail included payroll checks and other documents that contained proprietary account numbers and personal information. As a result, at least one of our residents experienced an identity theft.

Shortly after the theft of mail, residents reported being solicited for magazine sales from unfamiliar people who said they lived in the neighborhood or said they were friends of a neighbor. They also wanted the signatures of our residents who ordered magazines.

SECURITY MAILBOX is a manufacturer of locked mailboxes and several of us have purchased these units from this company. We have found that these units do deter mail theft. For a catalog or more information on these secure mailboxes call Dick Powers at 651 493 4196. He will also install the unit that you choose. Another resource that you may use to pursue other companies is to search on GOOGLE under the title: locking mailbox.

The last thing we want to do in this city is to prohibit our children from selling Girl Scout cookies or items for school fundraisers. However each of us should be cautious about door-to-door solicitations and ask the individual a question or two that might confirm identity. We should not give our signatures or any other information to strangers. And of course if you are suspicious, call the police.

I don’t want to alarm you but I want you to know that these incidents occurred in Sunfish Lake and we want to prevent them from happening in the future.

Have a safe and wonderful summer.

Sincerely,

Mayor Molly Park
