 18th ANNUAL ARBOR DAY FESTIVITIES

and NEIGHBORHOOD CLEAN-UP!

Where? Harmon Park at the end of Angell Road off Highway 110 on the north side of our City.

When?  Saturday, May 5 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. with guest host, Jim Nayes, your acting City Forester.

What?  Fun, Food, Beverages, Trees, Tree tips, Green tips, Buckhorn and honeysuckle removal tips, and more!   Also bring your recyclables (see list below).  And did I mention you could buy trees to plant at your home?

 Recyclables to Drop Off:

·        Plastic Bags

·        Packing Peanuts

·        Cell phones; CD’s; diskettes, audio and video tapes, rechargeable batteries

·        Inkjet, laser printer and fax cartridges

·        Hazardous waste (paint, garden chemicals, automotive, car batteries, cleaning supplies and the like)

Please Don’t Bring:

Yard Waste

Appliances

Electronics

Order your trees ASAP from Jim Nayes (where is Mark?) at 612-803-9033.  This year we have only 600 trees available (100 of each species) so order your trees early.

The cost is only $2.00 per tree so you can improve your forest for a very minimal investment.  I will demonstrate my proven methods for preventing your new young trees from becoming deer and rabbit food and deer rubbing posts.

Trees Available:

Scotch Pine                             Red Maple

White Pine                               Sugar Maple

Norway Spruce                        Red Oak

We are planning on sunny warm weather that will allow us to share the food, beverages, and companionship much more comfortably than last year. Let’s start a new tradition this year.  In celebration of trees and of Arbor Day, let’s pick up the trash that has collected along our yards, streets, lanes, driveways, cul-de-sacs, turn-arounds or roads.  Let’s Green our community together.

Now, since this is a newsletter, here is the educational portion.  The following questions relate to myths or common misinformation about trees.  See if you know the correct answers. Answers will be shared at the Arbor Day Festivities.

  1. How many growth rings do trees have?
  2.  If you pound a nail into a tree at five feet above the ground, how high will it be, on average, seven years later?
  3. What is the largest living organism on earth?
  4. Should you bandage a tree if it is bleeding?
  5. Given enough time will most trees heal after being injured?
